Sean Townsin, principal of Escuela Avancemos Academy, has been with the district for 4 years. He initially worked as the facilitator of the Success for All reading program in 2014, before becoming the Director of Curriculum in the following year. As he continued to work with teachers and support staff to raise academic achievement, he became the Chief Academic Leader in 2016. The 2016-2017 year saw the most academic growth and highest level of proficiency in state testing for any previous year. When Mr. Townsin first began working at Avancemos Academy, only 11% of students were reading at/above grade level. Since then, the percentage of students reading at/above grade level has risen to 33%. Furthermore, the academy’s proficiency on the M-STEP went from 7% in 2016 to 20% in 2017 for the testing area of ELA.

Sean Townsin officially assumed the role of principal for the 2017–2018 academic year, and has worked with other leaders in the district to continuously improve upon the academy’s academic performance through the adoption of innovative programs to support core instruction. To foster an embracing environment that rewards highly effective teachers, Mr. Townsin has operated through a distributed leadership model that empowers teachers and other support staff to lead important committees and projects that support learning.

Mr. Townsin received his master’s degree in educational leadership from Wayne State University, and is an officially licensed school administrator through the State of Michigan.
